Why Should I Switch To Digital Photography
I admit it Ive been slow to embrace the digital photography phenomenon. As an amateur photographer, I have two film cameras, an old manual Nikon and a nice autofocus Canon Rebel, and I resisted the temptation to indulge in a digital camera up until recently, even though each of my children had naturally been using them for years. But not long ago my dad gave me his mid-level Olympus (he found the menus hard to follow), and Ive been giving it a try. And, surprise, surprise! I even like it.
My number one favorite element about the camera is obvious no film. My father gave me two (thanks, Dad!) substantial memory cards, and I just dont run out of film. I dont have developing expenses for photos that I dont really want now that Ive seen them (I don't EVER pay to develop my pictures), and since I can take a look at the shot right after I took it, I can purge pictures I don't like to save the storage for other photos. Taking large numbers of photos makes me a better photographer quickly, and increases the odds of a really nice shot as well, and with digital it costs nothing. My camera has settings on it that let me to work as if I have film I can set film speed and fiddle with aperture/shutter speed settings the same as with my other cameras, so I can still use my previous knowledge photography, which I really like. Plus, seeing your photos right away is fantastic.
An additional great benefit of digital photography is photo editing. I havent invested in Photoshop at this point, but I have been looking at the Elements program for next year or so. I simply use Googles free Picasa and sometimes my PhotoDeluxe program (it came free with my scanner), and just with these I can do an awesome amount of quite marvelous things with my photographs. One of my favorite features is being able to fix incorrect exposures (It's a sad fact that I don't always notice backlit situations). Now with a little adjusting, I can save these shots! I correct red-eye quickly, sharpen focus, adjust contrast, reduce or intensify colors, and correct unwanted tint (such as from lamplight). I love cropping the best those lucky few who have their own darkroom crop their photos routinely, but us regular folks used to have to take what we got no longer! We can pick and choose, and revel in cropping unnecessary background, extra sky and turning the shot into a closeup is effortless. Resizing is a snap want some wallets? It's easy. 8x10, 4x6, some custom size a click of the mouse and it's done And dont forget special effects. Limited only by the features offered by your software, you might add neon glow, turn your photo into a line drawing, create a mosaic, soften your background the only limits are your imagination and your software!
When your photo is just how you want, you can print it on photo paper at home, or you can send it out for processing. Using Picasa, getting professionally printed photos is easy via the internet but only the ones you have decided you want. Also, you can easily put your pictures on a webpage, send them to your friends via email, or use them on a blog sharing your photos with others is simple using Picasa.
So, as you can see, I am a digital photography convert. There is so much fun in having this kind of control over your work that it has actually rejuvenated my love of photography. If you havent already converted too, think about it. It really is a blast.
